Some of you know I'm a member of SFI [STARFLEET International] which is a Star Trek Fan Club. SFI has a subsidiary group called the Star Fleet Marine Corps [SFMC] for those of us with a bit more martial bent.
Well, SFI just had it's once every three years election for the new Commander STARFLEET / Vice Commander STARFLEET. Part of the whole election process with the new incoming CS is the selection of a new Command Staff for both SFI and the SFMC. Change of Command takes place on 1 Jan, 2011. There are several different positions, but the ones I'll focus on are in the Marine side of the house.
We have a new SFMC Commandant and said new 'Dant will have his own new Staff. Various positions are things like TRACOM [TRAining COMmand - manages the SFMC Academy], INFOCOM [INFOmation COMmand - manages communication systems, etc], FINCOM [FINance COMmand] and FORCECOM [FORCEs COMmand - responsible for the day to day operation of the SFMC: awards, etc]. Each of these positions have a Deputy Officer [DCO] to help sharethe wealth the workload.
Long story short: starting 1 Jan, I'll be DCOFORCECOM [Deputy Commanding Officer FORCes COMmand], which is a General Staff position.
From a brand new munchie in Fleet the end of 2006 to one of the 'right up there' positions in the SFMC in 4 years.
I hope I know what I've let myself in for. Guess I'll find out come Jan.

Star Trek: Excalibur
Aug. 12th, 2010 01:53 pmDid I get your attention? Good.
This is information on the purposed web project that my ship's XO - Scott Nakada - is currently involved in [he's the prop master]. They are hoping to get funding from the Pepsi "Good Idea" project. Here's what he writes about it.
------------------------------------------
The top 100 voted submissions get posted to the next month, the top 2 places get funding for their project.
They do have a facebook page and have the support of William Shatner, Walter Koenig, Mike Okuda, and many, many more stars, and celebrities. They want to do a series of 22-24 webisodes (full hour long) a year. It’s a film school set up that currently is planned to not cost the students a dime, the professionals will be passing along what they know, to the students, and the students will be learning valuable skills and getting real world experience. But for this to happen like us with our film project (they also have volunteered to help us if we ever get rolling) they need funding.

So, if you'd like to see more Trek, drop by, register [it's free] and give them a vote.
Note: Scott was involved in "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" [props master, art dept, extra, etc] and makes props for Roddenberry.com, among others. Another ship member, Peter Christian, was also involved in the project [producer, art director, extra, etc]. I love my ship. We are so multi-faceted and geeky.

Lucks strikes twice.
Jul. 20th, 2010 11:45 pmYes, I am a Trekkie, or Trekker or whatever we're bing called this week. Have been since the original series came out in the 60's. And I have always had an interest in some of the more little known of the 'main' races. By 'main', I mean the ones that have back story and plot lines that thread throughout all the series, movies, books, etc. One of my primary areas of interest in STARFLEET International and the Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Marine Corps Academy has been the Romulans. One of these days I need to sit down and figure out what I want to do for my 'high level' paper on them.
I considered myself lucky when I found an very good condition box set of "The Way of Dera" last year for *very* little. I mean something like $30 US for the three book set, posters, etc. Absolutely great references, etc.
Well, lightning strikes again. Just nailed a 'very good condition' set of FASA gaming books: "The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge" and "The Orions: Book of Deep Knowledge". And for less than the price listed here.
Woo Hoo!
There's a couple of other Romulan reference books I'd like to track down, maybe another one on the Orions. Now if only someone would write a reference book about the Caitians, I'd be very content.

Wanted to share a goodie
Mar. 16th, 2010 01:52 pmYep, it's a hypospray and yep, it's a prop. But it's special for two reasons.
#1: it's not a 'commercial' prop. By that I mean it isn't currently a mass produced item. I didn't buy it from a toy company or prop company like Roddenberry.com.
#2: It was a gift 'of the heart' from a shipmate, Scott Nakada, who makes custom props for sale [and some for roddemberry.com to resell] from his store . http://www.xscapesprops.com/ Scott knew I've always wanted one and it was going to be a project we were going to work on together [he was teaching me how to design, mold, cast and paint props], but a relocation move came up suddenly and I thought we'd never get to it. At the last ship's meeting I was able to attend, he gave this to me.
I finially found the camera and snapped a quick picture. Believe me, the picture doesn't do it justice.

I may have to try this.
Jan. 12th, 2010 05:31 pmI like the premise - art before fic. In fact that's kinda how the
artword challenges went and how my fic "Messages" came about. I never could have done it without the stunning artwork and inspiration provided by my artist partner
strivaria.
Besides, I haven't committed trekfic yet so I guess I'm due.

Please meet my 'alter-ego' in Starfleet - a Caitian named T'Mayla Rotaru, who is a Starfleet doctor from the TOS/Reboot era.
I am seriously doing the happy dance over this sketch.
And now, after showing it to you, I'm off to show it to my fellow crew members on my Starfleet International 'ship', the USS Thermopylae.
EDIT: She's taking for commissions right now - pretty much any idea, if folks are interested.
Twitter claims a new one...
Jun. 1st, 2009 11:55 pmHoly Frack! Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy has a twitter account.
Leonard H. McCoy, MD
Or so you are led to believe.

What Star Trek character am I?
Mar. 26th, 2009 06:08 pmNo surprises here. I think the disturbing part is 'Ensign Expendable Red-Shirt' is so high on the list.

The magic of making the magic
Oct. 22nd, 2008 09:12 pmI just spent the last 6+ hours at a friend's place learning and implementing neat new skills: mixing, tinting and pouring resin into molds, working with pressure chambers designed to compress the bubbles in said molds so the end result won't be bubble ridden, trimming, hand sanding and filling any bubble holes with moldable resin, etc. Covered basic machine sanding, painting, etc. Tomorrow? More fun with molds, sanding, filling bigger defects, painting, etc.
What was I doing, you may ask? I was learning to make hand held Star Trek props and prop parts: hand phaser, PADDs, comm badges, etc. Like these.
Some will be going out for a charity auction for 'Make A Wish' and some are for sale through said friend's home business [already completed prop pieces or prop kits] - XScape Props. Between Scott's props and Peter's costuming [Outworld Sutlery has merged with XScape Props], I can indulge my fan-girl geekiness to my heart's content. And find out for myself just how many of nit-picky hours of hand work go into crafting these things. My own pet learning project, using a mold that Scott has already made, is a PADD similar to this. Today was casting and hole filling. Tomorrow will be back filling, finish sanding and, hopefully, the first of what may well be 7 to 12 coats of paint finish. Scott does all of his own graphic inserts, so that's not something I have to figure out.
At least right now.
Hopefully I'll get a chance someday to learn mold making and some of the other aspects of this. But for right now, I'm perfectly happy to be learning how to make some of the magic we get to see on the big and little 'screen' from one of the pros.
