This is from the front page of my old website. I don't have the exact date it went up, but it was within a day or two of 9/11/2001. I felt it was appropriate then and it still feels right to me today.

"In Memoriam"

This opening page is dedicated in memoriam for the innocent lives lost during several acts of unwarranted acts of terrorism that were inflicted on the United States of America on 11 September, 2001.

Please take a moment of silence to reflect on the atrocities committed on that day, not just in the toll of innocent American and visitor lives taken - both on the ground and in the air - but the toll taken in lives of the firefighters, paramedics, policemen and other rescue personnel who went into the middle of Hell trying to save lives when the rest of the World Trade Center Towers fell.

And think on the heroism of the air crews and passengers of the hijacked planes who did whatever they could to avert a greater disaster. No matter if they succeeded or not.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe that to be true. This picture was forwarded to me by my husband Jeff, who found it on the Web Site of his former Army unit: the 1st/509th Airborne Infantry. I share it, and his comments, with you now.

"This is a good picture, got it off of the '09 www site... it's a bit of a gut wrencher... apparently it was dropped through the mail slot at one of the New York fire stations. It had a note saying something to the effect: "I hope this is okay with you guys, I finished it last night."

They saw the person as he was running away, young male, mid to late teens... Even the kids are taking it seriously"

"For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know."
*** unknown ***

"Peace" to my 'Brothers and Sisters In Arms' who's lives were lost in the service of their Country. We will not forget your sacrifice nor forsake you. We rededicate ourselves this day to the cause of peace and freedom throughout the world.

On April 26, 1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the town of Pripyat, Ukraine exploded. The explosion took place around midnight while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. 4 workers were killed instantly. Four days later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate. The town still remains listed as uninhabitable to this day, although a few hearty souls have returned to it.

Reactor #4 after the disaster.

Chernobyl is the only 'level 7' incident [as categorized by the International Nuclear Event Scale] listed by the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] to date.

Take a moment to read the wiki entry on the incident.

And then take a moment to reflect on mankind's hubris.

Friendship 7  'slipped the surly bonds of earth' atop an Atlas rocket and threw it self into the skies, making John Glenn the first American astronaut into orbit the Earth.  I remember watching this on the black and white TV my folks had [great big console - little tiny TV screen].  This was one of the rare times my mom let me 'have a sick day' and stay home from school to watch.  [One of those things' we didn't tell dad about - he didn't understand my fascination in things science and space].

By today's standards three orbits is nothing.  But back than, it was amazing. Add the fact there was a mechanical failure that pretty much forced Glenn to drop computer control to line up for re-entry position.  Add to that the error message saying that the clamps holding the retro-rocket pack 'may' have released too early - if they had, the chances of a 'catastrophic re-entry failure' [read 'burn in like a meteor'].

It's amazing just how long a 10 year old can hold their breath if they are really motivated.

I think I'm going to dig up my copy of 'The Right Stuff' and rewatch it later tonight.  It feel right.

God Speed, John Glenn

Mercury Friendship 7 Mission Patch

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

[X] means I've actually done it. I'm adding some commentary along with it.

Pretty much anything I've left blank I really could have done - it happened during an age and time it was available to me. But my personal preferences kept me from doing it.

--------------------------------------------------------

[X] I've been to a drive-in movie theater.

[X] I saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. [The very first time they were on, too]

[X] I voted for (or could have) Ronald Reagan.

[X] I was in a Christmas pageant in public school. [pretty much every year since kindergarten]

[X] I remember what I was doing when John Kennedy died. [was at home sick from school watching TV when it happened]

[X] I used to watch Star Trek during its original run. [Yep, I was a member of the 'Vulcan Consulate' and one of the third season write in campaigners]

[X] I know what 45 and 33-1/3 describes. [ditto with 78's]

[X] I would go to sleep while or just after watching Johnny Carson.

[X] I have watched a black and white television. [That was all we had until we were in High School]

[X] I've been spanked at school by a teacher/principal. [Also had my mouth taped shut, but that's another story]

[ ] I've been to a Cher concert. [Never Cher, but does an early Niel Diamond one count?]

[X] I watched The Sonny and Cher Show during its original run.

In memory of all the fathers, of all the sons, of the brothers and uncles and 'guys-next-door' who slogged and fought their way up the hell that was the beaches of Normandy, France.

D-Day, June 6, 1944.

We will remember.

I remember.

I remember sitting on a friend's livingroom couch eating oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins which a bunch of other SF friends.

I remember we *all* held our breath until we heard those first words and then I'll always be amazed we didn't blow the windows out of the house with the sound of cheering.

I remember the science fiction that had become a major part of my teenage life merging with science fact that July morning.

I remember the day the entire planet united as one people with one voice: one fear, one concern and one common goal.

I remember the day the world changed.

I remember.
