If You Won The Lottery…

** Would You Still Work?

I don't work now. That whole 'disability' thing. But I'd go back to school and take classes in things I've always wanted to but didn't let myself take because it would either be 'a waste of money' or 'taking money away from the family'.

Hell, I might even go for my MD.

** Would You Care What People Think?

Sadly, I'm pre-programmed to care what people think. I think it's genetic. it's definitely 'nuture and nature'. But I think being financially free might help decrease that a bit.

** Would You Share With Your Family?

Damn skippy straight! Bills paid. Homes paid off. Trust funds set up for kids education.

Hum ... let me clarify this. My 'In Law' family and my 'Family of Choice'. The only remandier of my 'blood family' is one sister and she can figure out her own life. She was never there for me and pretty much only came to me to further her own projects and needs. I'm not going to bail her out anymore. I've done that enough in the past.

And there would be several charities that would be getting a regular donation.

** Would You Still Live on a Budget?

Yeah. I'd have help figuring it out [financial adviser] because there are times my head starts whispering 'There's no therapy like retail therapy'. But without a budget things go wonky.

But if the bills are pretty much paid off / taken care of, my budget would be a lot bigger. ;}

** Would You Splurge?

Again, damn skippy! But I'd honestly try to stop and think of things that would be a good splurge. A new laptop. A new bed [YEAH!]. Heck, a paid for house somewhere. It wouldn't have to be big, just well laid out.

In memory of family and friends who have lost the battle with cancer; and in support of the ones who continue to conquer it! Post this on your LJ if you know someone who has or had cancer.

-----------------

I have a very limited knowledge of my direct family, their parents, etc. I know my mom had precancerous colon polyps that were removed. My husband's step dad is dealing with melanoma and being treated well for it. A 'step-aunt' [husband's aunt] is dealing with breast cancer.

I've had a lot of friends who have been touched by cancer in some form: breast, uterine, color, liver, etc. Most made it through the battle. Two didn't.

let's see, three of my mother's siblings, and one of my father's all past away from cancer. I believe at two of my aunts (by marriage) as well. Each had a different one: lung, brain, kidneys, throat and I'm forgetting one.

Myself? I had cervical cancer [stage 3] back in the 70's when I was in my 20's. I get a pap every year along with a mammogram.

So far so good.

An ABC meme

Meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] inkandchocolate

A. Age: 59

B. Bed size: queen

C. Chore you hate: cleaning/mopping/vacuuming floors

D. Dogs: Dogs are okay, but I'm basically a cat person. With the kind of work schedule I used to keep, cats could take care of themselves if I got stuck pulling a double or triple shift. Dogs, not so much.

E. Essential start to your day: 1-2 cans of diet cola. That's my caffeine jump start.

F. Favorite color: Autumn tones - rusts, dark and olive green, golden tones

G. Gold or silver: Gold

H. Height: 5’7"-5'8" [depends on who does the measuring]
I. Instruments you play: a lot of them. Not good with brass or bowed strings [violins, etc], but can get through on most else. Was tone percussion in band/orchestra for several years and had 10 years of accordion growing up. Currently just guitar, doumbek, bodhran and a couple of varieties of recorder and penny whistle.

J. Job title: somewhat broken/retired Army vet and civilian health care provider

K. Kids: 1 boy - 28 yo

L. Live: currently in SW Idaho

M. Mom’s name: Dorothy

N. Nicknames: very few actually. "Gato" is my call sign in the Starfleet Marine Corps and I'm known as Rowan in the SCA

O. Overnight hospital stays: 'way too numerous to count, but most were surgical in nature and only a day or so. One 3 month run at VA right after Desert Storm for a bunch of stuff.

P. Pet peeve: folks who talk on their cell phones while driving.

Q. Quote from a movie: ["Independence Day" - The President's briefing before the final attack]
Good morning.

In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind.

"Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation.

We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

R. Right or left handed: right

S. Siblings: 1 sister. We are estranged

T. Time you wake up: between 0830 -1000, depending on when the cats start bugging me

U. Underwear: cotton and comfortable.

V. Vegetables you dislike: I really can't think of one off the top of my head.

W. What makes you run late: usually just me - I cut things too close and get out the door later then I plan

X. X-Rays you’ve had: pretty much my entire body, some parts several times [see 'O' above] along with several CAT scans, MRIs, and a radioisotope body scan and a couple of fluoroscopic exams. But despite it all, I do *not* glow in the dark.

Y. Yummy food you make: not much any more - I'm just cooking for me. But when I can, I bake like a dream.

Z. Zoo: Yep. 'All creatures great and small'.

It's been a while since I did a meme and this one looked good. I gacked it from [livejournal.com profile] fringedweller

A is for ACCENT: Pacific Northwest which, I'm told, is pretty much the neutral when it comes to US accents

B is for BREAST SIZE: Quantity sufficient. Honest. I've never felt I needed either a reduction or an augment. Floats between a 36C to a 38D depending on weight and how much I work out and bulk up my shoulders

C is for the CHORE YOU HATE: Vacuuming. It wreaks havoc on my back.

D is for my DAD'S NAME: James.

E is for the ESSENTIAL MAKE-UP ITEM: I really don't wear makeup, but if I do, it's shadow and mascara and a touch of lipstick

F is for FAVORITE PERFUME: Not something I wear, but if I did it would be woody/musky. I don't do sweet or flowery

G is for GOLD OR SILVER: Definitely gold. But copper's good too.

H is for HOMETOWN: Lovely Enumclaw WA where the biggest thing in my 4th Grade class is we finally got dial phone numbers and didn't have to call the local operator to call someone else. A couple of years later we got full 7 place numbers. Home was Taylor 5-3430.

I is for INSOMNIA: Fairly frequently. This is something me and my doc deal with as we can. And if we can't I just bull through it. Meds help some.

J is for JOB TITLE: Retired military medical provider and/or retired civilian health care provider. Pick one or both.

K is for KIDS: one 28 year old male who, I believe, is currently in Nebraska

L is for LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: I'm renting a family house from one sister-in-law via the other sis-in-law who is managing it.

M is for MOM'S BIRTHPLACE: I *think* it was somewhere in Nevada, but it's not something we ever talked about

N is for the NUMBER OF APPLES YOU'VE EATEN: For real? Apples are on my top 5 list of fruit so I haven't a clue the number. At least a metric tush load.

O is for OVERNIGHT HOSPITAL STAYS: Several for different things over the years.

P is for PHOBIA: Great big honkin' bugs! Oh, and some little bitty tiny ones too.

Q is for QUEST: To finally find some sense of contentment in my life

R is for RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Polytheistic and all my own business

S is for SIBLINGS: One younger sister

T is for the TIME YOU WAKE UP: Somewhere between 10 AM and noon. But if you look back at question "I" and realize I very seldom get to sleep before 3 AM or so, it's no big deal.

U is for the UNNATURAL HAIR COLORS YOU'VE WORN: One time I had a professional lightening job go really bad and I ended up looking like a strawberry. This was back in the 70's, well before crayon colors and my normal hair color was chestnut brown. And I had a henna application go bad and I was orange, but that was easily corrected.

V is for the VEGETABLE YOU REFUSE TO EAT: Avocados. It's a texture thing.

W is for WORST HABIT: Much procrastination and easily distractabl.... Hey... a Chicken!

X is for the X-RAYS YOU'VE HAD: No way to keep track. I've been a health care provider since 1970, active and reserve Army from 1974 to 1996 and a VA patient since then. I'm amazed I don't glow in the dark.

Y is for the YUMMY FOODS YOU MAKE: Give me an idea and I'll give you a food. I really have few cooking/baking disasters, but when I do, they are *really* memorable.

Z is for ZANY QUIRK: Oh come on. For real? If I had to pick anything, it would be collecting cat things. Other than that, I'm a SF&F fan, a member of the SCA for over 30 years, a member of STARFLEET International and play a tall lady ginger cat on Second Life if I'm not wandering around as a Gorean Bond Maid.

Pick something.

Oh... and I also like to collect Cthulhu plushies, but have never read Lovecraft. Does that count?

Ditto with being a 'Rocky Horror Virgin' and proud of it.

You are The High Priestess

Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.

The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
6. Tag five people pretty much everyone.

Okay ... let's stick out an arm, grab the closest book and see what we get.

“As he leaned against the window and watched the terrain unfold into the heart of Africa, Breman became terrified of coming to earth. It was safe in the air, high above the immeasurable forest, but down there . . . It began to dawn on him that he was going to Bumba to die. He had recently been assigned to Michigan as a state epidemiologist, and suddenly he had been called to Africa. He had left his wife back home in Michigan with their two children, and he began to suspect that he would never see them again. He had brought an overnight bag with a toothbrush, and he had managed to pack a few paper surgical masks and some gowns and rubber gloves into the bag. He did not have the proper equipment for handling a hot agent. The Buffalo descended, and the town of Bumba appeared, a rotting tropical port spread out along the Congo River.”
~”The Hot Zone” by Richard Preston, copyright 1994, 'Part One: The Shadow of Mount Elgon', “Ebola Rive - 1976 Summer-Autumn”, page 123]

“The Hot Zone” is a true history of the beginning of the research that went into 'discovering' and trying to understand the hemorrhagic virii: it chronicles a series of real situations that cumulatives in the first documented outbreak of the Ebola virus in the US. Yes, it's an 'old book', but that does not negate it's information.

Sometimes it good to have an old first edition of something.

1.) What was your favorite birthday (party) ?

Most of my birthdays were spent either working or, while I was in school, at the school's winter concert: I'm a December kid. Himself took me out to dinner once at the RAM on the waterfront for my birthday and that was pretty wonderful.

2.) Where would you rather live and why: a houseboat, a tourbus, or a private plane?

A houseboat. No doubt about it. I used to houseboat sit for friends years and years ago during the summer on Lake Union, Seattle, WA. and it was wonderful.

3.) If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

I can't think of a single thing. I had surgery on my jaw once and ended up with my mouth wired shut for 8 weeks. Ice cream and milk shakes became hateful in less than a week.

If I *had* to choose something, I'd got with stir fried mixed veggies.

4.) What's your favorite (genre) section in the library?

Science fiction. Since I can remember reading anything.

5.) If you could be written into one of your favorite novels, which one and why?

Anne McCaffrey's "Harper Hall" series [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Harper_Hall_Trilogy]. I've always wanted to live a life totally focused on music and the idea of being able to impress a fire lizard is seriously cool.

Second very close choice would be the 'Chanur' universe by C. J. Cherryh [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chanur_novels]. I mean, come on. Bipedal, sentient felinoids in space. What's not to love?

Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one.

You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met?

You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies.

My turn.

Four jobs I’ve had in my life:
1. Computer 'Intern' [read 'General Flunky and Computer Gofer'] for Dept. of Ecology
2. Health Care Provider - both hospital and home care [pick a flavor - I've done a lot of them]
3. Army Reserve Recruiter [but I got better - Really!]
4. Housekeep-Housecleaner [how I got myself through a couple of *really* broke times of my life]

Four TV shows I DVR:
(I don't have a DVR, so I'll list what I like to catch as able)
1. Stargate: Atlantis [so of course the swine canceled it...]
2. NCIS
3. CSI [the original]
4. pretty much anything on the Discovery channel

Four places I’ve been:
1. Rhyiadh, Saudi Arabia [thank the Army for that one]
2. Kfar Menahem, Israel [a kibbutz in south-central Israel where I lived on a dig in the early 2000's]
3. Sydney, Australia
4. Huntsville, Alabama at Adult Space Camp

Four favorite foods:
1. salmon [pretty much any fish, actually, but aslmon especially]
2. honeydew melon
3. black raspberries aka: 'blackcaps'
4. hot, fresh French bread right out of the oven with real butter

You are The Lovers

Motive, power, and action, arising from Inspiration and Impulse.

The Lovers represents intuition and inspiration. Very often a choice needs to be made.

Originally, this card was called just LOVE. And that's actually more apt than "Lovers." Love follows in this sequence of growth and maturity. And, coming after the Emperor, who is about control, it is a radical change in perspective. LOVE is a force that makes you choose and decide for reasons you often can't understand; it makes you surrender control to a higher power. And that is what this card is all about. Finding something or someone who is so much a part of yourself, so perfectly attuned to you and you to them, that you cannot, dare not resist. This card indicates that the you have or will come across a person, career, challenge or thing that you will fall in love with. You will know instinctively that you must have this, even if it means diverging from your chosen path. No matter the difficulties, without it you will never be complete.
